POST-CIVIL WAR ARCHERS
Will and Maurice Thompson, two brothers from Georgia, became accomplished archers. After the war they turned to longbows for hunting and a healing pastime. Maurice had been wounded and both were reduced in circumstances.
In the winters of 1867 and 1868 they bowhunted on extended trips to Florida's Upper St. John's River where they hunted and studied the abundant avian life. Later, they arranged to stay on a sailboat while hunting at Lake Okechobee. It was normal for them to take several cases of arrows on these trips.
Maurice wrote the classic book, THE WITCHERY OF ARCHERY, a wonderful read that sparked archery interest. Clubs began to spring up all over the country. Will and Maurice, although not as well known, probably did more to boost archery than Saxton and Pope. The first NAA tournament was held in Chicago in 1879. Maurice was the first president and Will won the event ending up with two wagon loads of merchandise prizes. Although, they never hunted with Saxton and Pope, they did correspond.

| Hawaiian pig hunt - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 Wayne LaBauve had a great trip to Hawaii where made a couple mountain pig hunts along the Maui north
shore. The first hunt he had some in close, but too much cover for a
clean shot. The next hunt with Trad Gang friend, Jerry Scoville,
(Islandlongbow) he got a 20 yard shot at a young pig using the Guana selfbow
his other Hawaiian guide and friend Manny had given him. Another good time hunting pigs in the Islands.

| BOWHUNTS '08 - Thursday, February 28, 2008 Mike Wesley hunted 3 nice bucks this season at Tunica Hills WMA. He got a 15 yard shot at one of them, but the thick brush deflected the arrow. Traditional bowhunting can be tough. Good going Mike - he's still out there. Maybe next year.
Allen Oglesby got a 175#, nice buck last October in Claiborne Parish. He got to see this buck close up twice in nine days. The first time he got a good look at him. About a week and a half later he climbed the same tree and arrowed him at 17 yards.
Nine LTB guys and two bowmen guests joined Wayne LaBauve on a late February javelina and wild pIg hunt to La Pryor, Texas. Mike Byrge arrowed a javelina and had good blood trail, but the animal found some impenetrable cactus to escape in. Joe Wronkowski arrowed a feral pig at a waterhole. Neither of the animals could be found. Mike Byrge and Michael Harbison both had fun shooting rabbits. Michael and his brother David each arrowed a big rattler. Another hunter almost got a shot at a pig, but it winded him just as he was drawing to shoot. Tommy Robinson built a ground blind inside a low bush. As the sun started to set, a herd of Javelina surrounded his bush. He picked out one that was 7 yards away, but as he raised to shoot they all bolted. He shot the chosen one at 20 yards. It was running full out and he hit it in the vitals. It didn't run far. Tommy shot the running javelina with his sinew and bull s |

Michael and David Harbison made a tough bowhunt to Tensas over the MLK weekend. It was 19 degrees with a thin skiff of snow. Mike saw a really big buck, but no shot. David had five does come under him and he arrowed the last of the bunch at 20 yards for his 1st traditional bowkill. Congratulations David! Tommy Robinson shot a nice doe in October with his new take-down sinew/bullsnake backed Osage selfbow and a 135 grain Magnus broadhead on one of his wood arrows. He made a great shot and watched her go down from his stand. A great morning hunt.
A Christmas doe is becoming a habit for Wayne. He arrowed another 110# doe two days before Christmas hunting with his dad near Lake Dautrive in Iberia Parish. This must be the 3rd year in a row that he has done this.

| New LTB President - Thursday, May 03, 2007Don Jackson, Ragley,LA, is the LTB President.
Wayne LaBauve passes the banner after years of LTB leadership. Wayne did many things for LTB, but the highlight of his tenure was his eagerness to secure access to a centrally located place to have the annual Sterling Harrell State Long and Recurve Championships, North vs South Shoot and the LTB Primitive Archery Expo. The beautiful Mountain Bayou Lake Boy Scout Camp became that place. Thanks Wayne!
Don Jackson is an excellent choice. He has lifelong interest in archery and bowhunting. His yearly trips out West to Elk hunt, his background with the Boy Scouts and the years he has spent as an archery instructor give him a great background of experience.

| GREGG'S YEAR END DEER DOUBLE - Saturday, January 06, 2007
Mike Byrge had a good hunt in mid February. He stalked up on a bedded, wicked tusked, 200# boar and arrowed it at 15 yards. Great stalk Mike!
Emile LeBlanc arrowed a December doe with his 45# Bear Black Bear recurve. Emile had bought this bow in Montana in 1972 when he was 19 years old. This was the first real bow he ever owned. He used a 1816 X7 shaft, an old Fred Bear razorhead and wild turkey fletching. Congratulations on such an unique traditional endeavor!
Gregg Gravois had a great end of the year hunt near Morgan City. He got up a tree in flooded palmettos and shot 2 deer with his recurve -- both at nearly 30 yards. The first was a nice doe and then soon afterward a big 8 point buck with 8" G-2 tines and a 20.5" inside spread. They about filled his boat on the way home -- and his dad shared the hunt with him. Good going Gregg!
Kip Manuel killed a nice doe on Dec 28 with traditional gear. |
| MIKE WESLEY ARROWED A LATE DECEMBER NINE POINT - Sunday, December 31, 2006This has been a good year for Mike Wesley. He got an 8 point in October at Tunica Hills WMA and on December 28th he and Sam Gaspard scouted out a huge Louisiana 9 point and later Mike shot it at 10 yards. The deer weighed 212 pounds and had an inside spread of 16.5 inches.
To read the hunt story go to ARTAC.org website and and click on Recent Hunts. Congratulations Mike and Sam! |

He sent a homemade cedar shaft tipped with a Tex Holloway stone point into her chest at 12 yds. She only ran 50 yds. As far as is known, this is the first, all primitive tackle, bowkill in the state. |

| LTB CONTINUES TO HELP THE BOY SCOUT WITH TRADITIONAL ARCHERY -- '06 - Wednesday, September 13, 2006The LTB guys traveled to Mountain Bayou Lake Boy Scout Ranch 6 days in June '06 to show the young guys how to make bow strings and fletch their arrows. This helped satisfy some of their Archery Merit Badge requirements. The scout archery range is very nice. Last year LTB furnished round hay bales for their targets and bought them 3 cloth target covers to help with the shooting skills part of the merit badge. Also the club loaned out 6 fine, light weight recurve bows for the summer sessions. We are continuing to help them upgrade their archery range. Michael Harbison, Wayne LaBauve, the Resweber brothers and Tommy Bell all pitched in. Many thanks.
LTB members may be interested in knowing that with their help and support the Mountain Bayou Lake Scout's Archery Program is approaching a total of over 1400 youth participating in archery in 2006. This past weekend was the last of the Cub Scout Adventure weekends and the scouts still have the Boy Scout Winter Camp coming.
