The National Field Archery Association was founded in 1939. Since around 1934, a number of target archery clubs had been setting up temporary field courses with targets situated over wooded and sometimes rugged terrain. These types of courses provided a change from the more rigid style of target archery and originally consisted of people only shooting instinctively.
A club in Redlands, California set up the first permanent field course in 1934. It consisted of approximately 20 targets and was layed out on very rugged hills. Shots ranged from close up to one target that was 160 yards across a steep ravine. A standard field round was held in Michigan in 1939 at their State Field Championship. The instinctive division was won by a young man by the name of Fred Bear. The NFAA now has 50 chartered state associations and over 1000 affiliated clubs in the United States and abroad.
